In the Field - a wilder laboratory

In the Field – a wilder laboratory is a collaborative cross-disciplinary, research project led by Jane Watt and SE Barnet (Blast Radius) with  Dr Mark Bowler and Dr Daniel Mills (Senior Lecturers in Wildlife and Ecology at Universities of Suffolk and Aberystwyth) in partnership with Suffolk Wildlife Trust (SWT) at Martlesham Wilds, Suffolk.

It is a longitudinal research project that evaluates ecological change through an art-science approach. The project examines specific locations within Martlesham Wilds, the east Suffolk coastal river site now owned by SWT as it transforms from an arable agriculture landscape through natural restoration process. This is one of the first examples of nature-led restoration that is being monitored through art-science knowledge exchange using established, new and novel approaches of collection, evaluation and dissemination. Initial base line data has been collected and measured since 2023. This includes: water, soil, flora and fauna surveys and sampling; acoustic recording; mammal camera traps; observational drawing; grid referenced still and moving image; 3D and colour spectrum scanning.

Jane has undertaken on-site documentation through drawing, still and moving image photography, as well as 3D scanning and casting of samples from the last harvest. She is developing an on-going series of colour spectrum works using Dan Mill's annual quadrat photographs that chart the change of vegetation at specific locations across the site.
