Wingspan
Wingspan was part of a series of works on paper and canvas that Jane made during her Research Art Lab residency, based in the Power House on Orford Ness, National Trust Nature Reserve. During the residency in April 2025, she investigated early camouflage research that took place on the Ness during World War I, alongside her own contemporary observations of colour, pattern and texture of the shingle and marsh landscape.
These largescale paintings, on paper and raw unstretched canvas, reference experimentation that was undertaken on the site on the wood and canvas structure of a WWI Sopwith Camel plane. The paintings use 8.53m of canvas and paper, the same as the wingspan of the Camel. The work was installed in the Power House as well as back in the landscape. The painting was animated by the wind and dwarfed by the environment which it references and in which it was made.
