Star Gazing was commissioned for the new Edinburgh Dental Institute in 1997 and was a permanent installation throughout the hospital surgeries. Above each dental chair a unique fibre optic star constellation was installed. The constellations twinkled and changed colour (each department has a different range of colours) creating a visual stimulus and point of meditation for the patient. 

There were 34 constellations in total throughout the hospital and they were all different. Each constellation had an information plaque next to the chair so that the corresponding dental chair is known by a star name, for example the Pegasus Chair.
