Reflections on Home

Reflections on Home was a year-long artist residency that Jane undertook in collaboration with Sara Heywood on the Alton Estate, Roehampton, London, one of the largest post-war housing estates in the UK. It was commissioned by Artscape and Redrow with Wandsworth Council as part of the Alton Estate Regeneration.

The artists worked with over 200 people who live, work or have a connection with the Estate to gather a vibrant mix of audio-visual material. Conducting interviews and workshops with local schools, youth groups, OAP groups, Roehampton University, local businesses, workers and residents, they developed a temporary installation with interactive sound sculptures, performance audio tour and a mobile audio walking app that celebrates the area’s rich history, past and present-day experiences. These include: stories about finding love as former neighbours meet again later in life; the enthusiastic creation of a unique spoon collection by a primary school child; ghosts and underground tunnels in a former seminary; living in iconic post war tower blocks and bungalows; and a pet cat that likes to go for a ride in a tower block lift.

The interactive installation was part of the Wandsworth Arts Fringe and an edited soundscape was broadcast as part of Art Licks Weekend Radio in partnership with TACO! And RTM radio.
