PUBLIC ART COMMISSIONS | STAR GAZING

Star Gazing was commissioned for the new Edinburgh Dental Institute in 1997 and is a permanent installation throughout the hospital surgeries. Above each dental chair there is a unique fibre optic star constellation. The constellations twinkle and change colour (each department has a different range of colours) creating a visual stimulus and point of meditation for the patient. There are 34 constellations in total throughout the hospital and they are all different. Each constellation has an information plaque next to the chair so that the corresponding dental chair is known by a star name, for example the Pegasus Chair.
