PUBLIC ART COMMISSIONS | ORBIT

Orbit is a permanent sculpture that hangs from the atrium space in the main concourse of St. Johns shopping centre in Perth. It was commissioned by Grosvenor Estate Holdings in 1996 and this was my first permanent public commission. I obtained a satellite photograph of Perth and pixelated the image to form the basis of the composition of coloured beads. The work comprises 26,000 glass faceted beads that are glued at regular intervals onto fine stainless steel cable. The strands of beads are attached to a steel ring creating a cylindrical form. The image has no beginning and no end: an orbit. I worked closely with architects Reiach and Hall and lighting designers Jonathan Speirs & Associates in order to realise the work.
